It doesn’t matter what colour your skin is, to look great you need to know what colours suit your skin tone. Even if you find the most flattering dress, wear it in the wrong colour and it just won’t look right. Luckily dark-skinned ladies have plenty of flattering shades to choose from. Whether you want to make a bold statement or prefer softer hues, women with dark skin have plenty of choice, and are lucky in that there are plenty of bright colours to try out. While pale skin may be overpowered by such bold colours, vivid shades of blue, red, fuchsia and turquoise will look great.
At the other end of the scale, you could also try icy, cool-toned pastels such as pale yellow or lavender, and of course you can pull off black and white clothing as well. Eggplant is another reliable colour to experiment with as it compliments both warm and cool skin tones.
What suits you? So, what’s the best way to determine whether a colour suits you? Firstly, it’s a good idea to take a friend shopping with you, a friend that will give you an honest opinion on what looks good and what doesn’t.
When checking your outfit in the mirror take the time to look at how your skin looks. If you’re wearing the right colour your skin will have a healthy glow. If your skin looks slightly ill, tired or a bit washed out, move on to the next item. To get a true idea of what an outfit looks like try clothes on in as natural light as possible and against a plain, light background. This creates a blank canvas and makes it easier to judge what looks good.
Some final tips…
Try to keep an open mind when it comes to updating your wardrobe and try to separate yourself from your favourite colour unless you already know it suits you. When assessing the clothes you already know, you might find that you are prone to choosing the same colours, colours that maybe aren’t the most flattering for your skin tone. Experiment, try things on and ask people’s opinion rather than sticking to the same shades, you might be surprised!
If you do find a colour that you love but you’re not convinced it suits you, try wearing it on the lower half of your body so it’s away from your face. Alternatively you could try to find some accessories in this colour to match a more complimentary colour.
Remember, African culture is bold, bright and beautiful, embrace this in your own style!
