Manchester City have spent nearly US$1bn on acquiring the world's best footballing talent following the club's take over by Abu Dhabi United Group Investment and Development Limited in summer 2008.
In the four years since that deal, spearheaded by HH Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the English Premier League club have splashed out on some the sport's best known names, including Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany.
These investments culminated in the team trumping bitter rivals Manchester United to the Premier League title yesterday. The club sealed their first league championship triumph in 44 years after an amazing comeback against QPR at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
The league leaders looked to have blown their chance for glory as they trailed the relegation-threatened outfit with just added time to play in the match.
But goals from Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero completed a historic 3-2 win on the final day of the 2011-12 English Premier League season as title rivals Manchester United beat Sunderland 1-0.
"Five minutes from the end I did not think we could win this game. We deserved to win this championship," City manager Roberto Mancini told Sky Sports: "After 44 years I dedicate this to all our supporters."
City and United both finished on 89 points with City's better goal difference settling the most gripping title race since Arsenal edged out Liverpool on the final day of the 1989-90 campaign.
