Spots & Dots - Damien Hirst and Yayoi Kusama' Exhibition @ Pop and Contemporary Fine Art, Singapore

By Lu Yawen

Both are artists who have mastered the use of dots in their artwork but that's where the differences end. One is a controversial artist who ranks as the world's richest while the other is an 82 year old whose art stemmed from a mental condition and recently paired up with Louis Vuitton for a capsule collection.
Although both artists were born from the pop art era, the origins of each artists' spot paintings are extremely different; British Damien Hirst first used colored spots to represent pills in his Methoxyverapamil painting in 1991, and Yayoi Kusama developed hers when she was a child as a form of self-therapy.
Even the way their paintings are done are different; Hirst enlists the help of numerous assistants but Kusama does hers entirely by herself which has resulted in her physical deterioration.
So head down to Spots & Dots exhibition from 4th July to 4th September to get a rare opportunity to examine dot paintings from two prolific artists side by side.
Pop and Contemporary Fine Art is located at Palais Renaissance, 390 Orchard Road, #03-12, Singapore 238871.
