Student Designer With a New Vision for Microsoft Says He's Joining the Company

by Mark J. Miller

Apparently, one way to get a job at Microsoft is to intelligently critique it.
Andrew Kim, a 22-year-old Los Angeles design student who still has a semester of school left, has had his phone ringing since last summer, when he posted a full redesign of Microsoft’s logo and look called “The Next Microsoft.”
Kim, who dashed it off in three days, said the company needed a brand refresh to help it kick its image of being “slow,” “outdated,” “conservative,” and “corporate.” [Examples of Kim's suggested work above via FastCompany.]
Kim's alternate look for Microsoft was praised by Fast Company as "a preview of how a younger generation of designers will treat today's hot button issues."
Ad agencies called. Electronics companies called. And, of course, Microsoft called.
Now, the out-of-the-box thinker has decided to sign on with the company he very publicly revamped, joining Microsoft this summer to work on the Xbox.
“This was a difficult choice to make,” Kim wrote on his blog, Minimally Minimal. “But when it came time to make my final decision, I wanted to work at a place I can really get excited about. Working at a company is like getting married, it becomes a fundamental part of your life. I want to work with awesome people on awesome projects that I can get excited about. If you’ve been watching Microsoft over the past year, it’s been exciting, regardless of what your ecosystem preference is.”
GameRanx.com notes that the hiring of Kim should help the company as it builds up to the expected release of a new Xbox home console this summer. The console is expected to be more than just a game system, and be instead  “a machine that will completely take over one's living room and become the centerpiece of one's digital lifestyle,” according to gameranx.com.
Sounds like the kind of marketing challenge Kim could take care of in just a couple of days.
